What it is
What face-to-face therapy is
Face-to-face therapy, also called in-person therapy, means you go to a clinic for your appointments and meet your therapist in the same room. Online therapy is the alternative, where you meet by video call.
Each session is 50 to 60 minutes. Our clinics are open from 9am to 8pm Monday to Friday and from 9am to 12pm on Saturday, by appointment only.
Our team includes HCPC-registered psychologists and BACP, BABCP and BPS-accredited therapists.

Is it right for you
When in person suits you
Neither format is better in itself. It depends on what you prefer and what is practical for you.
In-person therapy may suit you if
- You prefer to be in the room with your therapist
- You can travel to one of our clinics without difficulty
- Being face to face helps you to talk about how you feel
- You cannot find a private, secure space at home for online sessions
- Your internet connection is unreliable

Questions before you start
What people usually ask
1 Where are your face-to-face clinics?
We see people in person at our six clinics: Tynemouth, Newcastle (Gosforth), South Shields, Durham, Teesside and Hexham. Some practitioners also see people at our Yarm clinic. The Tynemouth and Newcastle clinics are each about a 5 minute walk from a Metro station. Each clinic page has directions and parking details. Not every therapist works from every clinic, so the Pathway Team will tell you who is available where.
2 Is face-to-face therapy better than online therapy?
Neither is better in itself. It depends on what you prefer and what suits your circumstances. In person, you meet your therapist in the same room and there is no technology to get in the way. Online therapy removes the need to travel. We offer online sessions across all therapy types, and many clients combine in-person and online sessions depending on their week.
3 How long are sessions, and how often will I come?
Each session is 50 to 60 minutes. Most people attend weekly or fortnightly, and you review your progress with your therapist as you go.
4 Are face-to-face therapy sessions confidential?
Yes. Your therapist keeps what you say confidential, except in very rare cases where there is a risk of serious harm.
5 How much does face-to-face therapy cost?
Fees are £95 for relationship therapy, £110 for specialist psychological therapy such as CBT and psychotherapy, and £140 for clinical and counselling psychology. Each session is 50 to 60 minutes. We accept most major private medical insurers. Tell the Pathway Team when you get in touch and they will help with authorisation.

Read articleHow Long Does EMDR Take to Work? Effects & Recovery
EMDR therapy typically takes 6 to 12 sessions for a single traumatic event (such as a car accident) and 12 or more sessions for complex or repeated trauma. Each session lasts 60 to 90 minutes, usually once a week. Many people notice significant improvement within the first 3 to 4 sessions. Post-session effects like tiredness or vivid dreams are normal and usually settle within 1 to 3 days. EMDR is recommended by NICE as a first-line treatment for PTSD and is as effective as trauma-focused CBT.
