These problems interfere with all aspects of the child’s life, including social and family relationships, and can put a strain on family life as a whole; it can be difficult to know how best to help, or indeed what the problem is, and why it is happening.

Sometimes (depending on the age of the child) these difficulties may manifest as behavioural problems and or failure to thrive in school. Young children, due to their developmental inexperience may not have the words to describe how they feel. Life and their experiences can be confusing for them, as they navigate the complex process of learning to make sense of feelings, and talk about them.

Some children experience psychological difficulties as a consequence of living and trying to cope with a chronic health condition such as epilepsy, diabetes, chronic pain, and chronic headaches.

Mental health difficulties in children can occur because of things that may have happened in the past, or because there are stressful events affecting them in the present time. It can be difficult to know where to turn in order to help, and can over time this can feel overwhelming, draining and exhausting for your child and you as a parent.

Clinical Child Neuropsychology |  Private Psychologist in Newcastle

Child or Paediatric Neuropsychologists are clinical psychologists who have undertaken a further four years training in paediatric Neuropsychology.

This enables them to understand the often complex relationships between a child’s behaviour and brain functioning.

Neuropsychological deficits can and do result from an acquired brain injury, or illness affecting the brain such as meningitis, stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI) following road traffic accidents for example.

The deficits can include problems with: memory, speech and language, attention and concentration, organising and planning, motor skills, aggressive behaviour and or personality changes that are out of keeping with a child’s typical profile.

Consequences of these can and do impact upon learning and performance in school, and result in stress in the home as families try to manage and cope with the difficulties. Children can also become depressed coming to terms with their difficulties and the impact this may have on their quality of life.

Child Neuropsychologists provide comprehensive assessments of a broad range of cognitive abilities to determine your child’s profile of strengths and weaknesses. From here specifically targeted and realistic interventions and advice can be tailored to the child’s neuro-rehabilitation and mental health needs.

Child Neuropsychologists are on the Specialist Register of Neuropsychologists held by the Division of Neuropsychology.
