About Toby
Hi, my name is Toby and I’m a Clinical Psychologist registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). I’ve got a decade of professional experience in supporting people who are struggling with various mental health difficulties. I offer collaborative, compassionate and personalised support, creating a therapeutic space that feels safe, steady and containing. I really value the importance of a strong therapeutic relationship, and am acutely aware of it’s importance for effective therapy. I’d like to think I’m pretty easy going and really don’t take myself too seriously, yet realise understanding people and owning our vulnerabilities in a therapeutic space is daunting and is serious work. Together, I hope we can build a shared understanding of your experiences - exploring what may have made you vulnerable to difficulties, what might be maintaining them, and what you hope will change.
At the beginning of my career I worked in several Assistant Psychologist positions, delivering low intensity psychological interventions in NHS and private sector services to people suffering from common mental health difficulties such as low mood, anxiety disorders, carer stress and adjustment to neurodegenerative disease. During my doctoral training I gained more experience working across different populations and settings, including inpatient, outpatient and community mental health services, with varying complexity and severity. I now work in an NHS older adult community mental health team, offering psychological assessment, formulation and intervention for older adults struggling with a variety of mental health conditions. I also complete neuropsychological assessments. Throughout my work to date, I’ve taken a special interest in anxiety disorders (OCD, panic, phobias, health anxiety and generalised anxiety), adjustment to neurological illness and prolonged grief.
As a Clinical Psychologist, I’m trained in several therapy models but draw on a variety of psychological theories and evidence-based models to inform my practice. I find that some people are keen to use certain models over others, whereas others don’t necessarily have a preference. I always think it’s important to speak openly about the options, and for you to take some ownership and begin to develop an understanding of ‘why’ one model might be used over another. Although I may bring the psychological theory and application knowledge, you are the expert of yourself and know best how you like to work. Predominantly, I utilise Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in my work day-to-day. Since qualifying, I have undergone further post-doctoral training in ACT for anxiety disorders.
I can offer brief or longer-term psychological therapy, face-to-face, depending on your needs. I understand all too well that the prospect of pursuing psychological therapy for the first time can feel like a lot. I’ve noticed over the years that people are often hesitant to start because they aren’t exactly sure what the ‘goals’ should or ought to be. Goals are subjective and I’m there to help figure it out with you, including what we might do about the problem. I’m the first to admit I don’t always have the answers and I can get things wrong, but you’ll see that I bring my authentic self, I’ll be real with you; I can’t expect you to be honest and vulnerable with me if I’m not the same. Most importantly though, is that you feel I’m the right fit for you. We can’t get on with everyone and if I’m not your person, that’s okay, I can help find someone who can give what you need.
