What are the symptoms of bipolar disorder?
Bipolar is characterised by periods of depression and periods of mania, or hyperactivity. The symptoms of depression include a lack of energy and motivation, feelings of guilt and despair, loss of appetite, and general negative emotions and outlook. The periods of mania however often consist of elation, fast talking, distraction, increased impulsiveness, irrational decision making and delusions.
Typically, bipolar sufferers will swing between the two states, although the transition periods can be different for each person. Some sufferers will experience rapid cycling, a swing from one to the other without a restive ‘normal’ period in between, whilst others can find themselves in a mixed state and dealing with symptoms of both depression and mania simultaneously.
What treatments can help with bipolar disorder?
Whilst medication can lessen the severity of both manic and depressive episodes for bipolar disorder sufferers, we at Select Psychology believe that it is also important to learn how best to live with bipolar on a day-to-day basis.
As a private psychologist in Newcastle, we use Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) as a way of helping those with bipolar know their own mind better. CBT is a talking-based therapy that can help you to identify thought patterns and processes and make problems that seem overwhelming (such as dealing with episodes of mania or depression) more manageable. Using CBT, you will be able to identify phases more easily, heading off any destructive behaviour patterns and decisions before they occur.
CBT is not a quick fix, but it can provide tools and coping mechanisms that will help throughout a lifetime.
