Our very own Dr. Matilda Moffett appeared on episode 76 of Running Partners recently. Matilda spoke about how running can boost both our mental and physical wellbeing. Podcast hosts Paul Griffiths and Alison Scope asked Matilda plenty of questions throughout the episode.
Dr. Moffett is one of our own Clinical Psychologists and a ‘real fan’ of the podcast. Running has been one of Matilda’s favourite hobbies since school, when she was that one kid who actually enjoyed cross country. Being able to share her experience on the big stage was an opportunity she couldn’t say no to.
Joining partway through the show, Matilda wasted no time in adding value with interesting insights into the correlation between mental wellbeing and running. She spoke about her background from the NHS to moving to the North East and transitioning into a unique and interesting specialist role. She also shared how she got back into running through her husband, who rekindled her passion after she watched him in the Great North Run.
Dr. Moffett spoke about how maintaining low-level running through her first pregnancy kept both herself and the baby healthier, what she best described as maintaining “baseline fitness.” In 2022, Matilda completed the Great North Run again, but this time with her sister, finishing in around the 2-hour mark. From this point, running became more and more a part of her life. With longer distances and more runs, Matilda was loving it, and she developed a more complex understanding of concepts like ‘pace’ and working with a dietitian. With the Boston Marathon on the horizon, the countdown was on.
Slowly but surely, the marathon goal came into view just a year later. Coincidentally, host Paul did the same marathon. They both described the extreme heat and the toughness of the challenge, but despite all this, it was Matilda’s best run to date!
To round off her interview, Dr. Moffett spoke about Select Psychology and the types of clients she works with, showing the transferable skills between issues you may experience with running and her role at Select Psychology.
Through injury and uncertainty, Dr. Moffett has overcome obstacles, and you can listen to her full story on episode 76 of the Running Partners podcast by following the link below:
