How it works
Building on what already works.
Most therapies focus on understanding problems in depth. Solution Focused Therapy takes a different approach: rather than analysing what is wrong, it focuses on what is already working, even a little, and how to do more of it. This shift in perspective often creates movement where things have felt stuck.
Sessions are structured around specific questions: what would be different if things were better? When have things been even slightly better recently? What was happening then? These questions are not superficial, they are designed to help you access strengths and resources that already exist, rather than waiting for problems to be resolved.
SFT is typically short-term and goal-oriented, making it particularly well suited to people who want focused, practical work with clear outcomes. It is used by HCPC-registered psychologists and accredited therapists at Select Psychology.

Questions before you start
What people usually ask
1 What is Solution-Focused Therapy and how does it work?
Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT) is a goal-oriented approach that focuses on your present and future rather than exploring past experiences. Your therapist helps you build a clear picture of what you want your life to look like and identifies the skills and resources you already have to get there. Sessions are structured around what is working, not just what is not.
2 How is SFT different from other talking therapies?
Many therapies spend considerable time understanding the roots of a problem. SFT takes a different approach: it assumes you already have the knowledge and capacity to change, and focuses on helping you clarify your goals and take practical steps towards them. This makes it particularly useful when you want to move forward without an extended period of exploration.
3 What issues does Solution-Focused Therapy help with?
SFT is effective for a wide range of difficulties, including relationship problems, anxiety, depression, stress, low self-esteem, and parenting challenges. It works especially well alongside couples or family therapy, where focusing on moving forward rather than apportioning blame helps everyone engage more constructively.
4 How many sessions of SFT will I need?
SFT tends to be shorter term than many other therapeutic approaches. Some clients achieve meaningful change in as few as three to six sessions, though the right number depends on your individual goals and circumstances. Your therapist will review progress regularly and adjust the plan with you.
