About Emma
Hi, I’m Dr Emma Dunne, a Chartered Clinical Psychologist, with over 16 years of mental health experience. I have worked with clients experiencing a range of mental health difficulties; both within the NHS and privately, in community and inpatient settings. I have also worked face-to-face and online; with individuals, families and groups. Bearing all of this in mind, I am certainly familiar with the large number of contexts and personal considerations that bring people to therapy!
I put my clients at the absolute centre of therapy – they are the experts of their own experience after all – while I bring curiosity, reflection and evidence-based awareness to the table. Together, I try to co-create meaning with my clients out of mental health experiences that can feel totally confusing, isolating and overwhelming at times. I believe all mental health struggles are valid and make sense, once we can apply some context and understanding to what the person has been through. I strive to apply and share this compassionate and non-judgemental understanding to my clients at all times, setting the path for the changes they want to make in the future.
In additional to my doctorate in Clinical Psychology, I have received training in a number of different psychological therapies; including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR). I most often find myself working ‘integratively’ with clients; which means I draw from a number of these different approaches to best suit the needs of the person and respect what they have come to therapy for.
I believe a healthy and respectful therapeutic relationship is an essential ingredient and foundation for effective therapy. I strive to maintain a robust and non-pathologising formulation (psychological understanding) of my client’s difficulties at all times, alongside a keen awareness of my client’s goals. I greatly respect the privilege and power that comes with clients choosing to trust me with their incredibly resilient life stories. With all of this being said, I so look forward to hopefully hearing from you and discovering how we might be able to effectively work together.
