WHAT IS RELATIONSHIP COUNSELLING?

Whether you are married, cohabiting, or living separately, all couples struggle and go through difficult times. Sometimes, these struggles can feel overwhelming. If you are in a long-term relationship, counselling can give you the time and space to reflect on negative patterns of behaviour that may have developed, which can impact a couple’s ability to resolve issues themselves.

Both partners will have the opportunity to share their perspectives and be heard, fostering a deeper understanding of the relationship and opening up new possibilities for growth. We recognise that attending joint counselling sessions may not always be feasible, and individual counselling is available to help address relationship challenges.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Improving communication enhances your understanding of each other, reducing conflict and enabling resolution of difference through negotiation and compromise. This is equally important whether the couple stay together or decide they are better apart.

FAQS

How long does relationship counselling typically take?

The duration of relationship counselling varies depending on the couple’s specific needs. Therapy for couples can typically last from a few weeks to several months.

Short-term counselling often includes 8 to 12 sessions, each lasting 50 minutes to an hour, making it suitable for addressing specific issues. Your relationship counsellor will assess your situation and estimate the expected duration tailored to your circumstances.

What can I expect from relationship counselling sessions?

Relationship counselling sessions typically involve open and honest communication between partners, with the guidance of a trained therapist. You can expect to explore your feelings, learn new communication skills, and develop conflict-resolution strategies.

The goal is to create a stronger and more fulfilling relationship.

Can counselling fix a broken relationship?

Counselling can improve a relationship by helping partners address underlying issues, improve communication, and develop healthier patterns of interaction. However, whether it “fixes” a relationship depends on various factors, including the commitment of both partners, the nature of the issues, and the willingness to work through challenges.

Counselling provides tools and guidance, but the outcome ultimately depends on the effort and openness of the couple involved.

Will both partners need to attend counselling sessions?

While both partners attending sessions is often beneficial, it’s only sometimes necessary. Some couples find individual counselling helpful before or alongside joint sessions.

Your counsellor can advise you on the best approach for your situation.
