WHAT IS DIALECTICAL BEHAVIOUR THERAPY (DBT)?

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy or “DBT” is a type of cognitive behavioural therapy that teaches people how to live in the moment, cope healthily with stress, regulate emotions and improve relationships with others.

It provides therapeutic skills in 4 key areas

  1. Mindfulness to improve an individuals ability to accept and be present in the moment
  2. Distress tolerance to improve tolerance towards accepting negative emotions
  3. Emotional regulation gives strategies to mange and change intense emotions that are causing problems
  4. Interpersonal effectiveness gives strategies that allow an individual to communicate with others in a way that is assertive, maintains self respect and strengthens relationships
