Therapy always begins with an assessment of the presenting issues but a specialist assessment is a little different: They explore a very specific concern in isolation using more formal, evidence based testing methods.

An assessment can be a standalone activity, that ends with a report being written outlining the findings of the assessment, along with advice and a set of recommendations. Alternatively, it can be followed by a course of therapy, where the recommendations are worked through with a therapist. Essentially an assessment is about gaining an understanding of the difficulties, whereas a course of therapy uses this understanding to help an individual work through their issues.
