DR KERRY MCCUBBIN

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST

Kerry McCubbin Clinical Psychologist

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE

Hi, my name is Kerry and I am a HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist. I have over 10 years of experience supporting people who are struggling with aspects of their mental health. I have worked with people struggling with stress, anxiety disorders, depression, self-esteem and eating disorders to name but a few, as well as currently working in the NHS as a Bariatric Psychologist, supporting patients with weight management and disordered eating.

I have an honours degree in Psychology with Criminology (BSC), a master’s degree in Psychology Research (MRes), a post-graduate certificate in Low Intensity Psychological Therapies (PGCert) and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy). My training allows me to draw from a number of therapeutic approaches in my practice, for example Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT). I enjoy helping people to make sense of the difficulties they are experiencing, to understand themselves and their journey, and to help them make changes in order to develop and grow.

I am experienced in offering therapy both face to face and online, and can arrange daytime, evening and weekend appointments virtually if required, allowing you to have the flexibility needed to fit therapy into your life, whether that be around work commitments, children or home life.

I understand that therapy can feel daunting at first, and you may have wondered if now is the right time. A question that might help you to make this decision is to ask yourself ‘how much of a negative impact has my problem had on my life?’ and then thinking about ‘how important is it to me right now to feel better?’.  If you rated these highly then now might be a good time for therapy. We can begin by exploring together what has brought you to therapy, creating a shared understanding of your unique journey. From here, we can start to make links between your history and your present, mapping out these connections and making sense of the unwanted symptoms, painful experiences or problem situations that occur. By working together to understand what is getting in the way of change can help us to plan the direction we take in therapy.

It takes courage to share your story with another person and I feel honoured when someone chooses that person to be me, please be assured that I will provide a relaxed, warm, non-judging and trusted space. If you feel like now is the right time for therapy, or if you’re unsure about where the problem lies, where you need support or how this type of work might help, please contact me for an assessment.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM OUR THERAPISTS

We carry out rigorous checks and vet all our therapists before they join the team. They must meet with our high standards of professional specification which includes:

First, we carry out a triage step during a 15-minute free initial telephone consultation. Depending on the challenges you’re facing, we will then recommend a counsellor, CBT therapist or clinical psychologist.

We also have clinic locations throughout the North, so there is usually one not too far from you.

As a result, we can usually offer an appointment quickly and at a time and place convenient for you. But, above all, tailored to your needs.
