What is dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT)?

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy  or “DBT” is a type of cognitive behavioural therapy that teaches people how to live in the moment, cope healthily with stress, regulate emotions and improve relationships with others. It provides therapeutic skills in 4 key areas:

  1. Mindfulness to improve an individuals ability to accept and be present in the moment
  2. Distress tolerance to improve tolerance towards accepting negative emotions
  3. Emotional regulation gives strategies to mange and change intense emotions that are causing problems
  4. Interpersonal effectiveness gives strategies that allow an individual to communicate with others in a way that is assertive, maintains self respect and strengthens relationships

What are the benefits?

DBT can help individuals to manage their negative thoughts and behaviours by accepting and regulating emotions and learning new, more adaptive ways of coping with these. Over time the aim is to decrease symptoms and behaviours associated to trauma, stress, anxiety and depression and enable a new way of approaching life.
