Therapy always begins with an assessment of the presenting issues but a specialist assessment is a little different. Specialist assessments explore a specific concern in isolation using more formal testing methods.
It can be a standalone activity that ends with a report being written outlining the findings of the assessment along with advise and a set of recommendations. Alternatively it can be followed by a course of therapy where the recommendations are worked through with a therapist. Essentially an assessment is gaining an understanding, whereas a course of therapy takes the understanding to help an individual work through their issues using therapeutic tools.
