Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

What is ADHD?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is most commonly diagnosed in childhood, but is also diagnosed in adults. It can affect areas of the brain that allow us to solve problems, plan ahead, understand others actions and control our impulses. Left untreated it can lead to poor outcomes in education and problems in developing relationships with others. At Select Psychology our ADHD psychiatrists offer a ADHD clinic in Newcastle that provides a range of support services, you can call our team today for more information.

What are the symptoms?

  • Overactive/impulsive behaviour
  • Easily distracted and struggles to complete tasks
  • Has difficulty remembering things and following instructions
  • Being unable to wait their turn
  • Excessive movement
  • Excessive talking
  • Acting without thinking
  • Poor organisational skills
  • Continually losing or misplacing things
  • Carelessness and lack of attention to detail

What are the therapies that can help?

Prior to therapy we would recommend that an assessment has been carried out, diagnosis made and a treatment plan identified. We do not diagnose ADHD/ ADD; a diagnosis should only be made following the NICE guidelines with multi-disciplinary team involvement.

Once a diagnosis is made, we can offer assessments of specific difficulties that may result from living with ADHD such as managing frustration, mood and anxiety difficulties.
